Mapleton Depot
Mapleton was named for a grove of maple trees near the original site of the town. It was founded with the extension Pennsylvania Railroad. The location next to the Juniata River, a tributary of the Susquehanna River was initially beneficial to the growth because of its close proximity to the Pennsylvania Canal. Beginning in 1824 the canal system was constructed over several decades. It was a system of canals, dams, locks, tow paths, aqueducts and viaducts. Adjoining Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and beyond to carry heavy ships. The canal system had a short life with the need being replaced by the iron horse.
Today the community is a welcoming town with a community swimming pool, Mapleton Riverside Park, and a great Italian restaurant – OIP. Kayaking ion the Juniata River is a favorite local pastime, along with fishing, hiking and hunting. All in all Mapleton has something for anyone that enjoys a small town atmosphere with close proximity to great health care, entertainment, dining and shopping.
